WARA IS AN ALL-VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION

Expectations for volunteers:

 Volunteers must have or obtain some basic certification in the first year;
  • Personal Watercraft Operator Card (PCOC)
  • Radio Operator Certification (ROC)
  • First Aid with CPR,
  • Marine Emergency Duties A3 (MED A3)
  • Complete the Phase I and Phase II Search and Rescue (SAR) courses offered by Coast Guard Auxiliary, and
  • Become a member of Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA).

Since your safety and the safety of your crew mates depends on a well-trained team, volunteers must also be prepared to participate and commit to training. That means;
  • Regular participation in on-water training each Monday from May to September.
  • Regular participation in monthly winter training sessions from October to April.

We've adopted a well known credo; “FAILURE TO TRAIN IS TRAINING TO FAIL!”
  • Volunteers must be available to respond rapidly to call-out in response to a marine Search and Rescue emergency. The boat and crew should be leaving the dock within 30 minutes of you receiving the phone call that someone is in trouble.
  • Volunteers are expected to monitor and respond to Wellington Rescue communication – usually by email.

In addition, volunteers are expected to participate in Wellington Rescue community events and activities. These would include such public relations events as Canada Day, Dragon Boat Festival and Pumpkinfest.  Volunteers are expected to help in fundraising activities if required.

Since volunteers are members of Wellington Auxiliary Rescue Association (WARA), a non-profit corporation and registered charity, they are expected to attend ALL official meetings of the organization.

AND, YOU HAVE TO BUY YOUR OWN UNIFORM!

It looks like a lot doesn't it? You’ll find it won’t take more than the optimal one to two hours a week.  And, you’ll get to know and work with friendly, dedicated people in addition to making a real contribution to safer boating.  Perhaps you’ll save a life.
