OPERATING COSTS
Wellington Rescue, our vessel, receives a payment for each hour we operate either in training or on a Search and Rescue mission from the Federal Government. The payment is to cover the cost of fuel, vessel maintenance, equipment replacement, dockage, insurance, etc., but this reimbursement does not cover all of our operating costs. etc.
Each year, Wellington Auxiliary Rescue Association must invest time and effort raising money, about $2,500, just to cover our basic costs. Every two years, our life raft has to go to Toronto to be recertified – another $600. And on it goes. |
REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE
Regular maintenance is critical to the operational effectiveness of our vessel. As well as planned maintenance, we also incur damage from time to time due to the nature of our rescue operations. Whether it is striking debris on the lake, or propeller damage while providing a rescue in shallow water, accidents and damage happens. Being out of service is not an option.
For example, one season, we destroyed two propellers when we had to carry out searches for possible victims in shallow water. They cost $500 each. On another occasion, we had to have the engine lower-unit rebuilt at a cost of $1,000. |

We don’t JUST go out on the lake to aid boaters in distress or search for missing people. We also respond to and retrieve dangerous objects that could damage vessels. Each year we retrieve many large floating objects that pose a risk to boaters, including large logs, dislocated buoys and floating docks. We have also rescued and guided back to shore a large Deer who was in distress and was swimming away from shore. We gently guided it to shore and followed her all the way back.
